Steak Rub

I love a great steak on the grill.  For the longest time I have used a store bought Montreal steak seasoning.  I would rub the steaks with the seasoning and let them sit in the fridge most of the day.  take them out 30 minutes to an hour before grilling so they could warm to room temperature, and throw them on a hot grill.  Well something changed with the seasoning that I used to buy, and I just don't like it anymore.  So after a few tries with different store bought seasoning mixes I decided to just mix my own.  This is simple and delicious.  I keep a shaker top jar of it mixed so whenever we are having steaks it is ready to go.

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp course salt
  • 1 tbsp course cracked black pepper
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1/2 tbsp granulated garlic
  • 1/2 tbsp dried rosemary, lightly crushed
  • 1/2 tbsp crushed red chili flakes
  • 1/2 tbsp dried thyme

steak seasoning

Instructions:

  • Put all ingredients into a shaker top jar (I re-used a paprika container) and shake to mix.
  • Rub on steaks and let sit in the fridge for at least a couple of hours.  take the steaks out of the fridge 30 minutes to an hour before grilling.  Letting the steaks get to room temperature will give you more even cooking and make it easier to get the right mid-rare temperature on the grill.
