Cuban infusion

Somehow this weekend at the lake turned into a cuban culinary adventure for us. I guess it started out with Brenda trying to find a recipe for mozzarepas. Let me explain that one a little bit. While in NYC last weekend, we all shared a mozzarepa at the San gennaro festival. It's basically cornbread pancakes and mozzarella cheese, and it is so good. Well come to find out that arepas are traditionally cuban and can be filled with a variety of things. So we fiddle with a couple of recipes that we found and came up with this mozzarepa recipe.

While we were at it, we decided to also find a new recipe for dinner, and we ended up with this Cuban Arroz con Pollo recipe.

We were also going to make some apple empanadas for dessert, but we had enough to eat without them.

Everything was delicious! Personally, I would add some spice to the chicken and rice to kick it up a bit, but it was good as is. They were both pretty easy, give them a try.

Road Trip - NYC Sept 08 edition

So, we spent the weekend (Sept 13th - 14th) in New York City. As usual, we had a great time. I'll try to sum it up for you in 20 pictures or less...

We drove in early Saturday morning. Our hotel was in Brooklyn, so across the Brooklyn bridge, we went.

Brooklyn Bridge

We met up with Tom and Alyssa, and headed to Yankee Stadium for a game. We wanted one last chance to see a game at the old stadium, but the new stadium looks like it will be nice.

After the game (and a shower) we hopped a subway back to Manhattan to little Italy for the Feast of San Gennaro. I have never seen anything like it. The streets of Little Italy were filled with vendors, amazing food, and pastries, and crowds of people. We ducked in to a great restaurant for dinner. I highly recommend Il Palazzo on Mulberry St.

After a great dinner and nice Desserts, we headed back to the hotel. In the morning we did a bit of a walkabout back to what we thought was Moms old neighborhood... unfortunately after walking, and walking, and thinking we found the old house, and walking back, we found out it was the wrong address. So this is not a picture of where my Grandparents lived in Brooklyn.

Not the house

We headed back to Manhattan to the financial district and down to the World Trade Center Site. It is still a difficult place to visit, but construction is moving along, and things have changed a bit since we saw it 2 years ago.

After seeing the WTC site, we walked over to battery park city, and down to the ferry to the Stature of Liberty. Not sure what the sculpture in the second picture is supposed to be, but it was right down by the ferry?

When we got back from the Statue, we headed back to Brooklyn, and headed for home. On our way home we went to what we found out was the correct address of the old house, 369 3rd st, on the corner of 3rd st, and 5th ave. It is a beautiful neighborhood (just 2 blocks form where we were earlier.) The houses are great old brownstones, there is a coffee shop on the corner where my mother remembers the newsstand. A nice cafe across the street, and a park on the opposite corner. It really is a great neighborhood.

Then it was just a matter of driving home, another chance to cross the Brooklyn Bridge. This time we got a good view of the waterfall.

It was a good weekend. Did I make it in under 20 pics?

Well, we are on vacation!!! We are having a great time. Tom and Alyssa came up for the weekend, we went out in the boat, we have been kayaking, and eating some great food. Of course I will have some pictures, but probably not until we get back. For now I thought I would upload a short video of Desi swimming in the lake. Enjoy.

So I promised some new pictures... here they are. I am going to embed two slide shows. The first one has pictures of Dave and Denise's new home. They closed this past Friday (the 13th) and moved in on Saturday. The second has all of the pictures of Tess. There are some more recent ones in there from this weekend. She is getting big.
